Israel and Syria History

Syria (ancient Assyria) conquered Israel and forced them to disperse, known as one of the first diaspora of the Jewish people -722 BC

In 1947, Israel was declared a state. The Arab nations were against this declaration by the International Community (IC). This began the War of Independence, which led to Israel becoming an independent state on May 14, 1948. The Arab main countries who built forces against Israel were Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, and Jordan. This included Syria, who contributed at least 5,000 troops. -(1947-48)

The war ended with the 'Amistice Agreement'. It provided border locations for each country called the 'Green Line'. The agreement states that Syria forces would evacuate, as long as Israel demilitarize that area, however, Syria and Israel did not agree on the border issue. -1949​​

Rebel militant forces attack Israel from within Egypt, Jordan and Syria. -(1950-60)

The Syria, along with other Arab nations attacked Israel, which is known as the 6-Day War. One of the many pre-emptive forces began with Palestine guerilla groups that attacked Israel from Syria borders, however Israel drove them from Golan Heights. Israel gained most of the west side of majority occupied Israel (Golan Heights). This was an established "Purple Line" (a ceasefire line). -1967

The Yom Kippur War occured in retaliation to areas (Gaza, West Bank, Golan Heights, and Sinai) gained by Israel during the Six-Day war. This war was led by Egypt and Syria and other Arab countries. Israel maintain the Golan Heights. -1973

In the midst of the Lebanon civil war (1975-1990), Syria assisted PLO fighters in Lebanon in attack against Israel's invasion into the Lebanon. -1982

During the Lebanon civil war, Hezbollah militant groups are organizing to fight against Israel. -1985

Many terror attacks from militant groups continued with the Palentinian until the International Communitiy (IC) intervened. One attempt at peace was the 'Middle East Peace Conference', in Madrid. Jordan, Israel and IC attended, however Syria would not. -1991​

Militant forces supported by Syria continued attacks against Israel. Israel continued counter attacks. Syria began to have an alliance with Iran and Hezbollah, during the 2006 Lebanon War. -(2000-11)

There was mostly fighting with rebel forces (civl war) within Syria. Hezbollah participated in the civil war and border attacks against Israel. -(2011-23)

Until this day Israel and Syria have not entered a 'peace' agreement. ​Civil unrest continues. The fall of Assad, who fled to Russia has caused the declaration of various militant groups to claim territory throughout Syria, however at the southern parts of Syria attacks continue, which intensified since the Hamas-Israeli. Israel has invade southern-western parts of Golan Heights. -(2024-present)
