Lebanon and Israel History

  • In 1947, Israel was declared a state. The Arab nations were against this declaration by the International Community (IC). This began the War of Independence, which led to Israel becoming an independent state on May 14, 1948. The Arab main countries who built of forces against Israel were Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. This included, Lebonan who contributed 1,000 Lebanese, but their participation was limited.  -(1947-48)

  • The 'Armistice agreement' was created end the war. The agreement contained temporary location markers called the 'Green Line'. The agreement between Lebanon and Israel was that Israel would remove their forces from 13 villiages. -1948​​

  • The Palestinian Liberation Organizaiont (PLO) began. This was the voice of the Palestinians, led by Arafat (1969-2004). -1963

  • Lebonon did not participate in the Six-Day war. -1967

​

  • Lebonon military was small, thus they did not participate in the Yom Kippur war, however militant groups launched attacked into Israel. -1973​​​​

  • Civil war broke out from rebel forces within Lebanon and the Lebanon Civil War began. The PLO dominated the Lebanon southern border and many terror attacks were against Israeli citizens, in the North. -(1975-1990)

  • Israel launched two campaigns, in Lebanon to stop militant groups from attacking in the north region of Israel. The first was the invasion called Operation Tatani and the second was called the 1982 Lebanon war led to Israel occupying Lebanon. -(1978 & 1982)​​​​

  • Hezbollah originated to fight against Israel. -1985

  • Many terror attacks from militant groups continued with the Palentinian until the International Communitiy (IC) intervened. One attempt at peace was the 'Middle East Peace Conference', in Madrid. Jordan, Israel and IC attended, however Lebanon and Syria would not. -1991

  • As Israel controlled the southern Lebanon, Hezbollah launched several attacks that led to Operation Dan Veheshbon-1992

  • Coordinated by Clinton, Israel and Arafat agreed on the Olso Accords, in which they agreed to coexist, peacefully. The organizations associated with the PLO and Islamist terror groups, such as Hamas and Hezbollah were against these steps, although, Fatah agreed. The accords was to begin the peace process It has not led to peace. -1993​

  • Fighting continued. There were continue concerns about the 'Green line' border, because of Israel control of south Lebanon. Operation Grapes of Wrath (1996). T -(1996)

  • Hezbollah continued until Israel de-occupies south Lebanon. -(2000)​

​

  • Border clashes with Hezbollah, including other militant groups continues with Israel. Israel continue to counter attack until one of Israel's soildier was captured, which led to the war called the 2006 Hezbollah-Israeli War into Lebanon. -(2006)

  • Sporadic clashes continue along the Lebanon-Israeli border. -(2006-23)

​

  • After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023, Israel continued to hunt for Hamas in the Gaza region, which effected many Palestinians. This has sparked criticism from Hezobollah who began to increase attacks into Israel. -(2023-24)

  • The attacks between Hezbollah and other militants against Israel have intensified. Israel's invades south Lebanon -(2024-present)
